The Importance of Return Tickets

Jim Meneses celebrated his European Decennial (1985 - 1995) with the presentation The Importance of Return Tickets, four concerts of new music held as a part of the »Montags Musik« program at the Podewil, the center for performing arts in Berlin. Each of the four concerts was in two parts, beginning with a percussion duo, and followed by an ensemble performance. Each evening had a general theme:

  • ENERGY
  • STRUCTURED IMPROVISATION
  • CON-FUSION
  • DADA

Meneses was featured in four percussion duos with sparring partners HAN BENNINK (NL), CHRIS CUTLER (UK), DAVID MOSS (USA) and PAUL LOVENS (D). The featured ensembles were ATTILA (F/I/USA), BLAST (NL/USA) plus special guest TIM HODGKINSON (UK), PALINCKX (NL/USA) and KIXX (D/CH/USA).

In the series of the concerts at the Podewil, Meneses presented both his work as improvising percussionist, performing spontaneous duet compositions with four top European players, as well as his ensemble work, in which he combines the more traditional, timekeeping role of the drummer with percussion as an integrated melodic voice in the music.

Here are some short pieces from these concerts:

Etude #1, a duet of Paul Lovens and Jim Meneses in Berlin 1995
Ein bischen Ambition, as je blieft, a duet of Han Bennink and Jim Meneses in Berlin 1995
Il voce di Padrone, KIXX in Berlin 1995
