Biographical Notes
- Early 1980's - Nikolai Dmitriev actively participated in many aspects of artistic life in Moscow. This included the organization of concerts and festivals in small clubs, and lectures on traditional and contemporary music.
- 1984 - Dmitriev published his first article on music in a periodical journal. This led to a successful period of music journalism including essays, reviews and interviews. These appeared in daily journals, newspapers and specialized periodicals.
- Mid 1980's - He began to organize concerts and festivals beyond Moscow including Volgograd, Ekaterinburg, Smolensk and the provinces of Moscow.
- Late 1980's - Early 1990's - His concert and festival productions started to take shape covering a spectrum from folklore to modern classical and avant-garde music. Lectures and music reviews were published throughout the country. This included a course of lectures "The theory and history of music", given at several higher educational institutes in Moscow. He also lectured on the theoretical problems of improvised music at music conferences in Novosibirsk and Moscow.
- 1990 - Dmitriev began producing several jazz programs on Russian radio.
- 1991 - He became joint producer of a monthly television jazz program "Jazz Time". He also joined the musicians union and the society of alternative literature.
- 1992 - He produced several documentaries on jazz for Russian television. He co-founded the "Cotton Club", a riverboat jazz club on the Moscow river.
- 1993 - 1994 - Dmitriev continued to organize music festivals thoughout the country with an increasing emphasis on introducing western musicians to the Russian audience. He served as MC at joint Russian-German Festivals in Hamburg and Berlin. He also organized “Forward to the Past” a highly acclaimed joint production of Russian radio and TV.
- 1994 - 1995 - Nikolai Dmitriev became producer and manager of the Moscow Composers Orchestra. The group toured twice in Europe, appearing in Lithuania, Germany, Italy, Russia and Switzerland. MCO has two CD’s, “Kings and Cabbages” (Leo Records) and “Life at City Garden” (U-Sound). Dmitriev continues to be an active collaborator with festivals and tour manage-ment in both Europe and Russia.
